A large crowd, including hundreds of juveniles, congregated at Navy Yard on Halloween Friday. One 18-year-old man and four juvenile boys were arrested for alleged disorderly conduct.

The crowd began coalescing at a park area between First Street and New Jersey Avenue SE next to an entrance for the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail station at around 7:30 p.m., the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Just after 8 p.m., the crowd swelled to a size of several hundred, mostly juveniles. The throng remained peaceful at first and was not disruptive, but as the night went on, some within the crowd started fights and disrupted traffic by not staying on the sidewalk as instructed, city police said.

A Metropolitan Police Department sergeant was injured after getting knocked to the ground while trying to restore order. D.C. Fire and EMS treated their minor injuries at the scene, District police said. The scene was cleared by 11 p.m.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the National Guard, responded to the scene. MPD arrested five people at the scene.

Kaeden Brown, 18, of Accokeek, was arrested on accusations of having a prohibited weapon, a knife. Two Southeast 14-year-old boys were arrested for failure to obey and resisting arrest, a 15-year-old Southeast boy was arrested for public brawling and a 16-year-old boy from Southwest was arrested and accused of publicly consuming marijuana.

Metro Transit Police also arrested some suspects from the crowd; MPD did not say how many Metro Transit Police arrested, what those people are charged with or provide their identities.

“The behavior displayed last night in Navy Yard is unacceptable, and MPD and our law enforcement partners will have an increased presence tonight to ensure this does not happen again. This evening, MPD will preemptively close several streets around the park area south of M Street, Southeast,” Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said Saturday.
