For the first time in history, there’s an American pope (“Trump, Biden, U.S. Catholics hail first American pope,” Web, May 8). I have to wonder whether it was President Trump’s belief in the church that inspired the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV.

As a native English speaker, the new pope will be able to speak directly to the hundreds of millions of English-speaking Catholics around the world.

And like President Ronald Reagan, who had a strong relationship with Pope John Paul II, perhaps Mr. Trump will be able to forge a strong relationship with Pope Leo XIV, helping good overcome evil.
