President Trump on Tuesday said a “very, very big announcement” is coming this week or Monday, but remained tight-lipped about what it would be, only cryptically adding that it might “not necessarily” be on trade.

“We’re going to have a very, very big announcement to make. Like, as big as it gets, and I won’t tell you on what, and it’s very positive. It is really, really positive, and that announcement will be made either Thursday or Friday or Monday before we leave,” Mr. Trump told reporters during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Mr. Trump is slated to go on a trip to the United Arab Emirates on Monday, so the announcement could come before he leaves Washington.

“It’ll be one of the most important announcements that have been made in many years about a certain subject, very important subject,” Mr. Trump said.

“I’m not saying. I don’t want you to think it’s necessarily on trade,”  he added later.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration has been negotiating trade deals with several countries looking to stave off his tariffs.

Administration officials have said India, Japan and South Korea are the likeliest countries to reach a U.S. trade agreement first. The announcement has restored some confidence in the U.S. financial markets.
