OPINION:
I certainly appreciated reading “Reflecting on Memorial Day’s true meaning” by Michael McKenna (Web, May 25). Our nation must never forget the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform during armed conflict. Mr. McKenna’s piece was timely, meaningful and well-written.
In the final paragaphs of the op-ed, Mr. McKenna writes: “The courage and willingness of American soldiers, sailors and Marines to sacrifice has always been exemplary” and “think about the graves of our brave and capable soldiers, Marines and sailors…”
I’m certain it was just an oversight, but Mr. McKenna omits airmen and Coast Guardsmen from the list of military members who have given their lives in times of conflict. And in World War II, many Merchant Marines were also lost. These men and women gave their precious lives during our nation’s wars and deserve to be remembered. Their families and our nation mourn their loss and are forever grateful for their sacrifice.
