We humans love an altered state, with our preferred stimulants ranging from caffeine to cocaine. Coffee is of relatively little concern, but illegal drug use is a deadly game. About 108,000 Americans died in 2022 from cocaine overdoses and untold numbers are killed each year making the drug available.

Americans consume illicit drugs at a rate greater than any industrialized nation in the world. The Untied States is a wealthy country where cocaine is by far the drug of choice of the rich and powerful — those held least accountable and thousands of which, not by chance, live and work in Washington, D.C.

The use of cocaine is so accepted among the Washington elite that when cocaine was found in a locker in the White House on July 2, 2023, the FBI closed the case as unsolved in just five days. Without any real investigation or consequence in this case, it is of small wonder that cocaine use is as accepted as it is in America. We should all salute FBI Director Patel for reopening this case.
