Security guards shot a woman early Thursday outside the CIA headquarters in Northern Virginia after she drove into the facility’s gate, according to reports.
The security guards shot the woman in the upper body after she failed to stop while driving toward the main entrance around 4 a.m., according to CBS News. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.
The woman was preliminarily identified as 27-year-old Monia Spadaro, according to NBC News.
Court records show the suspected driver has a 2021 conviction for drunken driving in Arlington County. NBC reported that investigators are looking into whether the woman was under the influence during the predawn incident.
A CIA spokesman said the agency closed its main gate following the shooting. Employees were instructed to find an alternate route onto the federal property.
Fairfax County police said it dispatched officers to manage traffic flow on the 900 block of Dolley Madison Blvd. in light of the gate closure.
In March, an armed man ignited an hourslong standoff by the CIA’s main entrance when he pointed his weapon toward the headquarters and allegedly made threats about the agency.
Armed SWAT team members and armored vehicles crowded around the facility’s entrance as crisis negotiators worked to bring the man into custody.
The man, who wasn’t identified, eventually surrendered to authorities without incident.
In 2021, an FBI agent shot and killed Roy Gordon Cole outside the CIA headquarters after Cole pulled a sword out while exiting his vehicle.
Cole claimed during the incident that he was carrying a bomb, but authorities found no evidence of an explosive device.
He had a history of mental health issues and had previously tried to drive into the headquarters.
