OPINION:
Against the facts, the center-left government of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claims it is promoting democracy by restoring judicial independence, which was supposedly severely undermined under previous Law and Justice governments in Poland. Law and Justice is the conservative, traditionalist party of Poland.
Implementing “The Second Solidarity Revolution” continues to be the top goal of Mateusz Morawiecki, who served as Poland’s prime minister from 2017 to 2023, and who is a member of Law and Justice. In April 2019, at New York University Law School, Mr. Morawiecki underscored that communism in Poland only partially collapsed. Continuity in policy and personnel from communist Poland to the present is especially evident in the Polish judiciary.
In Morawiecki’s governments, then Minster of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro and Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski worked for true judicial independence in Poland by removing communist appointees and their children from the Polish judiciary. Today, Mr. Tusk wants a subservient Polish judiciary that he labels as independent.
Mr. Romanowski, a true Polish patriot, was recently was forced out of Poland by the Tusk government. Now in exile in Budapest, Hungary, he continues to work for judicial independence and “The Second Solidarity Revolution.”
