The Washington Nationals sent outfielder Dylan Crews to the 10-day injured list on Wednesday after the rookie suffered an oblique strain during Tuesday’s win over the Atlanta Braves.

The team called up its top outfield prospect, Robert Hassell III, to take his spot on the active roster.

The move is the first call-up for Hassell, the eighth pick in the 2020 MLB draft. He could make his major league debut as soon as Wednesday night against the Braves in Atlanta.

The Nationals added Hassell in 2022 as one of a bevy of prospects from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Juan Soto. The 23-year-old has spent the last three seasons working his way through the minor league system, though he impressed Washington’s coaches at spring training this year.

That wasn’t enough to land Hassell a spot on Washington’s opening day roster, with outfield spots filled by Crews, Jacob Young and James Wood.

In 43 games with Triple-A Rochester this season, Hassell has managed a .288 average with seven doubles, four homers, 24 RBI, 12 walks, nine stolen bases and 19 runs. MLB’s prospect pipeline listed the Tennessee product as the 11th-best player in Washington’s farm system.
