Capitals defenseman Alex Alexeyev started his offseason with a bang. The 25-year-old was charged with public intoxication after a fight in Arlington, Virginia, on Saturday morning, authorities confirmed on Monday.
Officials with the Arlington County Police Department told several outlets that officers arrested Alexeyev after a witness saw a “physical altercation” outside of a business on Clarendon Road around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
A responding police officer used pepper spray to take Alexeyev into custody, the police department said in an incident report.
Alexeyev’s mug shot showed the Russian smiling, still missing the teeth he lost in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Montreal Canadiens.
The 25-year-old was released without bond, the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office said. A court date was not available on Tuesday morning.
“We are aware of the situation involving Alexander Alexeyev and in the process of gathering additional information,” a Capitals spokesperson told The Washington Times.
The Capitals’ season ended in the second round of the playoffs with Thursday’s Game 5 loss at home to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Alexeyev, who played sparingly in the regular season, appeared in every postseason game for the Capitals after fellow defenseman Martin Fehervary suffered a season-ending knee injury.
