President Trump is welcoming South African refugees to the United States, and liberals are losing their minds. The idea that White people could be an oppressed minority has triggered a severe case of cognitive dissonance that exposes liberal motives.

On Monday, the first group of 59 Afrikaner asylum-seekers arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport with American flags in hand, eager to start their new lives. “All of these folks who’ve just come in today have been carefully vetted pursuant to our refugee standards,” said Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who greeted each of them personally.

The Episcopal Church, by contrast, slammed its red doors shut, ending its refugee settlement program lest government contract obligations force it to help “resettle white Afrikaners from South Africa.”

Afrikaners are victims of systemic oppression. In January, Pretoria’s racist government authorized the confiscation of property from these descendants of the Dutch settlers who arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in the 17th century to create a new home for themselves on the uninhabited lands they tamed. Also called the Boer, Afrikaners are being marked for murder on the farms their ancestors cultivated.

The threat is based entirely on skin color. Julius Malema, the influential politician who heads the Economic Freedom Fighters party, holds rallies in packed stadiums where he shouts things like: “Shoot to kiII. KiII the Boer, the farmer.”

South Africa’s despicable racial segregation policies from 1949 to 1994 created a legitimate grievance that should have been resolved with the overthrow of apartheid. Unfortunately, the lust for revenge hasn’t been sated. The African National Congress, a movement with roots in communism and terrorism, has held sway for three decades now.

Winnie Mandela, the wife of the first ANC leader, Nelson Mandela, famously said, “With our boxes of matches and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country.” She was referring to the barbaric practice of setting fire to a gasoline-soaked tire draped around the neck of an enemy.

That’s the background that drove the ANC to replace apartheid’s nefarious rules with new race-based decrees. Statutes such as the Employment Equity Act and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act are diversity, equity and inclusion measures on steroids that aim to diminish White participation in the economy.

Satellite internet entrepreneur Elon Musk summarized the impact of his home country’s postapartheid racial laws on X: “Starlink is not allowed to operate in South Africa, because I’m not black.” The latest enactment, the Expropriation Act of 2024, grants the government permission to seize land passed down from Afrikaner families for centuries so it can be redistributed “to bring about equitable access” without any compensation offered to its owners.

This racial hatred is taking a toll. South Africa has 62 million people, and 4.5 million are White. A decade ago, Whites constituted 9% of the population, but now they are 7% and dropping fast.

Contrary to their rhetoric, leftists aren’t interested in allowing anyone and everyone who is in danger to find shelter on our shores. Afrikaners are Christians who speak English and hope to live the American dream in ways that contribute to society. That’s precisely what liberals don’t want.

Democrats intend to import millions of dependents who will alter the character of the nation in ways that enhance their political power. Mr. Trump has shown their compassion is, and has always been, counterfeit.
