Despite all the evil generated by Hamas, let us be grateful that Edan Alexander, likely the last living American hostage, has been freed by the terrorist group (“Hamas frees Israeli-American hostage ahead of Trump’s Middle East visit, stokes ceasefire hopes,” Web, May 12). No doubt, the return of her son is the best Mother’s Day gift Yael Alexander could ask for.

However, if it had not been for President Trump’s working hand in hand with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is doubtful that Mr. Alexander now be free. With nearly 600 days in captivity, he is sure to have an extensive recovery period, both physically and psychologically.

In the meantime, if Hamas thinks Mr. Alexander was their ticket to a permanent ceasefire, guess again. Not until Hamas is destroyed or lays down its arms will the war be over.
