OPINION:
Notwithstanding the political left’s position to the contrary, President Trump is correct that illegal aliens are not entitled to due process to contest deportation. The Constitution only guarantees due process before the government can “deprive” someone of “life, liberty, or property.”
“Life” concerns execution. “Liberty” concerns imprisonment. “Property” concerns real estate or personal property. Deportation is not contemplated by any of the three.
Some will argue that this is a narrow interpretation of the Constitution; so be it. Mr. Trump’s position is solid and defensible. He should only ensure, administratively, that the target is indeed not a U.S. citizen. Once that is confirmed by the appropriate officers of the government, deportation should proceed without court intervention.
