The Nationals gave reliever Lucas Sims a pink slip for his birthday. The franchise released the right-hander, who turned 31 on Saturday, after another tough outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

Sims’ final appearance for the Nationals featured three earned runs and four walks as he recorded just two outs on Friday. Washington ultimately lost 10-0.

In 18 appearances for the Nationals this year, Sims recorded an abysmal 13.86 ERA with 14 walks in 12 2/3 innings.

Washington recalled right-hander Zach Brzykcy to take Sims’ place on the roster.

Sims was part of a historically terrible bullpen through the first six weeks of the season. Through Saturday’s games, Washington’s relievers boasted a league-worst 7.12 ERA.

Their lackluster performances, if they continue through the remainder of the season, would pass the 2020 Philadelphia Phillies for the worst bullpen ERA since Jackie Robinson integrated the major leagues in 1947.
