The longtime agent and business partner of former Denver Broncos quarterback and executive John Elway died in a hospital from injuries incurred after falling from a golf cart last weekend.
Jeffrey Sperbeck, 62, was injured in La Quinta, California, on Saturday and died in a local hospital Wednesday, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
Mr. Elway was purportedly driving the golf cart at the Madison Club in La Quinta when Mr. Sperbeck fell off, witnesses told Palm Springs’ KESQ-TV. The Pro Football Hall of Famer called 911, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection confirmed to the TV station that it arrived at the scene to provide care.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Mr. Sperbeck hit his head on the asphalt after falling off the golf cart, causing a traumatic injury.
In a statement, Mr. Elway said, “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
Mr. Sperbeck had been Mr. Elway’s agent and business partner for decades, teaming up to start the 7Cellars winery.
