Scoring 23 runs in an inning is impressive enough, but doing it without a home run or triple, like George Mason’s baseball team did at home against Holy Cross on Tuesday night, is absurd.Â
The offensive explosion broke a 41-year-old NCAA Division I record.Â
Only three other teams scored more than 20 runs in an inning in Division I: Valparaiso in 2010, Penn State in 1983 and Wichita State in 1984 all scored 21 runs in one frame.Â
After second baseman Jake Butler grounded out to start the second inning, 19 straight batters reached base for the Patriots on Tuesday. George Mason recorded 11 hits, eight walks and five hit batters before Holy Cross could find two more outs.Â
The Crusaders used five pitchers in the inning, including a pair who failed to record an out.Â
The game mercifully ended via the run rule after the seventh inning as the Patriots led 26-6.Â
The eye-catching final score wasn’t the highest output in George Mason’s history, though. The squad scored 36 runs in 1996, also against Holy Cross.Â
