Michigan infielder Mitchell Voit was feeling good during Sunday’s 11-0 victory over USC. So good that when he legged out a triple, he mimed snorting the third base line after sliding into the bag.
The celebration, which seemed to use the painted line in place of cocaine, elicited an apology on Monday.
“I made an immature decision in the heat of the moment,” Voit wrote in a Notes app message he posted to X. “The gesture I made does not reflect my character, the household I was raised in, or the block M that I represent in any kind of way.”
Voit, a 20-year-old junior from Wisconsin, finished the game with three hits and four runs batted in. The Big Ten named him Player of the Week just hours after the apology.
While the Wolverines’ coaching staff and public relations gurus might not have appreciated the celebration, some fans on social media did.
“Baseball could use more Mitchell Voit,” X user Steve Wallace Sr. wrote.
“NO!” former ESPN personality Katie Nolan wrote in response to Voit’s apology.
The video of Voit’s move attracted more than 1 million views on X.
Michigan baseball and the Big Ten have not announced any punishment for the celebration.
