The longest-tenured Washington Commander is sticking around. Fan-favorite punter Tress Way agreed to return to the Commanders on a one-year, $2.8 million contract, according to multiple reports.
In the hours before the NFL’s legal tampering period opened, Washington reached deals with Way and tight end John Bates. Bates’ contract extends through the 2027 season, but financial details were not available Monday.
Way, 34, is a two-time Pro Bowler who was regularly one of the Commanders’ best players throughout his 11 years with the franchise. The 2024 campaign was a shift for the locker room staple, though. He punted just 50 times as rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels powered an efficient offense that took the Commanders to the NFC championship.
Bates will rejoin Zach Ertz, who agreed to a new contract on Saturday night, in Washington’s tight end room. The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the top blocking tight ends in the league.
Bates recorded eight catches for 84 yards in 2024 but was a key factor in the running game.
The NFL’s legal tampering period begins Monday afternoon, allowing teams like the Commanders to reach deals with free agents. Washington ranks near the top of the league in cap space. Analysts expect general manager Adam Peters to be active in negotiations for pass rushers, receivers and defensive backs.
