“Defending democracy? Not so much” (Commentary, June 4) recounts terrible people doing terrible things to “defend democracy.” Good job! But there is a bigger problem the writer fails to acknowledge.

We keep lying to ourselves that we are somehow a democracy, something our Founders found so abhorrent that they took the time in the Constitution, in Article IV, section four to clearly state that the union shall “guarantee” a “Republican Form of Government.”

Of course, our population doesn’t know this because our failed public education system believes democracy to be a better form of governance. Democracy inevitably devolves into mobocracy, resulting in anarchy and, finally, tyranny. It’s time we started understanding who we are and stop believing we are something we are not.
