Former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens has dropped the ball in Pittsburgh after canceling an appearance at a youth football camp in the city.
Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth has stepped in to pick up the slack, according to staff members from TruEdge Sports, which is running the camp. The Penn State product and fan favorite agreed to attend the camp in Pickens’ place.
“Additionally, we are actively in talks with multiple other Steelers players and fully intend to build out an exciting lineup that delivers value to every family,” the company said in an email to participating families.
The late change caused the camp at the Steelers’ Acrisure Stadium to move from this Saturday to July 20.
Representatives from TruEdge said Pickens committed to the camp after the Dallas Cowboys traded for him in May. He canceled last week, according to the organizers.
“His sudden decision to back out not only reflects a disappointing lack of accountability, but also shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him,” the company wrote. “We are incredibly disappointed by his actions.”
During his time in Pittsburgh, the 24-year-old developed a reputation for character concerns. He was flagged for a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during last year’s Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Before that, he was involved in scuffles against the Washington Commanders in Week 10 and against the Cleveland Browns in Week 12.
“He’s just got to grow up, man,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after Pickens’ two penalties against the Bengals.
The Steelers later shipped the Georgia product to Dallas in exchange for a third-round draft choice in 2026 and a fifth-round selection in 2027.
