A D.C. college basketball rivalry is coming back.

Georgetown and George Washington’s men’s teams announced Wednesday they’ll tip off against each other in an Oct. 18 preseason exhibition at GW’s Smith Center.

The teams — two of the District’s most popular collegiate squads — last squared off in 1981.

The game won’t count in the standings, but Washington’s basketball fans have started buzzing.

“This is great to see. Fantastic for the city, for local basketball and for both universities,” Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, a Georgetown graduate, wrote on X. “I hope it is the start of more to come.”

The two squads played each other at least once per year from 1945 through 1981. The Hoyas lead the series with a 53-38 record, including an ongoing five-game winning streak against the Revolutionaries.

Both universities have fallen from their hoop peaks in the 1980s and 1990s. The Hoyas haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2021 and haven’t won a tourney game since 2015. They won it all in 1984.

The Revolutionaries haven’t gone dancing since 2014.
