This fall, Virginia will faces one of the most consequential elections in its patriotic and freedom-loving history. Virginia produced many of our Founders, including the state’s first governor, Patrick Henry, who famously said, “Give Me Liberty or Give me Death.” This quote expressed outrage towards an authoritarian and oppressive British monarchy. In the upcoming election, Virginians will have a choice between a candidate and party that will fight for less government, lower taxes and will defend our constitutionally guaranteed rights — and  more government, more taxes and more regulations.

In “Democrats hoping for anti-Trump backlash in Virginia’s race to elect first female governor” (Web, June 18) Washington Times reporter Seth McLaughlin indicates that Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican in the gubernatorial race, faces an uphill climb against her opponent, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger.

I don’t believe Virginians’ memories are quite so short, or that a few dislikes of President Trump’s policies has created a yearning for a return to the days of Ralph Northam, Terry McAuliffe or worse. Let’s not forget that under these two Democrats, Virginia’s economy underperformed, residents were overtaxed and an extremely liberal social agenda prevailed.

In a debate with Gov. Youngkin, Mr. McAuliffe showed his true Democratic colors by saying parents should have no say in their children’s school curricula. While in office,  Mr. Northam said that infanticide was an acceptable form of birth control, even though most Virginians were appalled by this. Thankfully, in the last gubernatorial election, Virginians, sick of the radical left’s nonsense, elected Mr. Youngkin.

Mrs. Earle-Sears has supported Mr. Youngkin’s policies and will continue to drive his economic and social agenda. Ms. Spanberger, by contrast, likes to portray herself as a moderate, but he days of moderates in her party are long gone. She, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, is a political chameleon that will try to appear moderate when it’s politically expedient. But if she’s elected, Virginia would be stuck with another liberal that overtaxes, defunds the police, puts criminals first and generally tries to turn Virginia into California East.
