The Washington Spirit will brave a midseason coaching change for the second consecutive year.

The National Women’s Soccer League club announced Monday that coach Jonatan Giraldez would leave his role in July to take the same position with French club OL Lyonnes.

The Spirit and OL Lyonnes — the reigning champions of the French women’s league — are both owned by Michele Kang.

Assistant coach Adrian Gonzalez will take over for Giraldez on July 18.

Giraldez led the Spirit to an NWSL championship appearance after joining the club in July. The 33-year-old, who rose to prominence with a storied run at FC Barcelona Femení, has recorded a 15-3-8 record in the District.

“It has been a privilege to lead this incredible group of players, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Spirit family,” Giraldez said in a statement. “I am especially proud to see Adrián step into this role. He’s not only a highly skilled coach but also someone who truly embodies the Spirit’s vision and values.”

Gonzalez served as an interim coach for the Spirit last year while Giraldez finished his final season in Barcelona.

“Adrian has proven that he is ready for this role,” Ms. Kang said. “He knows the team and has earned this organization’s trust through his hard work and dedication. I am looking forward to watching what this team can achieve this season and beyond under his leadership.”

The Spirit were 10-4-1 under Gonzalez last season.

“Our focus remains on continuing to deliver performances that make our fans proud,” Giraldez said in a statement. “I want to thank Jona for his leadership and friendship over the years, and I look forward to continuing to build upon the foundation we have established together.”

The Spirit (6-1-3) are fourth in the NWSL standings through 10 matches. The club is without star forward Trinity Rodman, who is recovering from a lingering back injury.
