Quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ imperfect offseason took another hit this week.
The Cleveland Browns rookie received a ticket for driving a Dodge TRX pickup truck 101 mph in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 71 near the Ohio Turnpike, according to multiple reports.
Sanders was a projected first-round pick in April’s NFL draft before sliding to the fifth round, where the Browns snagged him with the 144th pick.
An officer from Ohio’s Strongsville Police Department reported he witnessed Sanders speeding at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday.
Sanders faces a $250 fine to waive the fourth-degree misdemeanor case or could contest the ticket in court on July 3.
It wasn’t the first time he’d been pulled over for allegedly speeding since joining the Browns.
That ticket came after he was stopped by the Ohio State Patrol on June 5 in Brunswick Hills, Ohio. Sanders was pulled over for going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, Ohio State Patrol told WKBN-TV.
According to Medina Municipal Court records, Sanders failed to appear for an arraignment for that ticket on Monday and owes $269 in court costs.
Browns spokesman Peter John-Baptiste said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday that: “the team has addressed the tickets directly with Sanders and the tickets will be handled by him in the appropriate manner.”
The son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders basked in media attention throughout his college career at Jackson State and Colorado, both where his father coached.
Sanders said after the draft that his unexpected slide would “add more fuel to the fire.”
Analysts around the league attributed the draft result to a lack of elite athleticism combined with rumors about his performance in interviews.
“Now, as a 5th-string 5th-rounder battling for a roster spot — a place in the league — you obviously JUST CAN’T,” former ESPN and Fox Sports commentator Skip Bayless posted Thursday on X. “Now, unfortunately, all those critics are going to nod and say, ‘Told you so.’”
Sanders split snaps with fellow quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel during last week’s mandatory minicamp.
