Baltimore Orioles prospect Luis Guevara died after a jet ski crash in Florida, the team announced Tuesday. He was 19.
Guevara was one of two people hospitalized after a pair of jet skis crashed head-on near Lido Key off the coast of Sarasota on Sunday, according to The Baltimore Sun. One other Orioles prospect was reportedly involved in the crash.
Guevara was later pronounced dead.
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing,” Mike Elias, the Orioles’ general manager, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”
The O’s postponed their Florida Complex League games on Monday and Tuesday following the crash.
Guevara was an infielder who split time this season among Double-A Chesapeake, Single-A Delmarva and the Florida Complex League. The Venezuelan signed with Baltimore as an international free agent in January 2023.
