OPINION:
A car driven by the wife of Vance Boelter, suspected killer of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, was pulled over by police and found to contain guns, passports and a large amount of cash (“Minnesota man donned realistic mask, dressed as cop in fatal attack on state lawmakers,” Web, June 16). The couple’s children were also in the vehicle.
Are we to believe the missus was taking everyone to the local Dairy Queen for a cone — or perhaps that she was heading to a meeting with her husband in hopes of escaping the country? Relatives were there to take the car back to her home, leaving police no clue as to where she and Mr. Boelter were.
No need to be a MENSA member; what to do next is obvious. The wife ought to be charged with accessory to murder after the fact. She may well have known beforehand that murders were her husband’s objective, but that would be more difficult to convince a jury. If Mr. Boelter is convicted, he should be sentenced to life in prison, with no chance of parole or sentence computation.
His wife should be tried, convicted and sentenced to the longest term allowed by state law. How else can anyone claim “justice” is being served? How else will public officials feel safe? For too long courts have delayed justice, or failed to serve it at all. Such laxity only contributes to surging violence in America.
