OPINION:
While California Gov. Gavin Newsom Tuesday evening railed against President Trump for sending in the National Guard to quell the rioting taking place in Los Angeles, a sanctuary city, he went further and called the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army this weekend a “vulgar display to celebrate his birthday.”
First, the planning for the patriotic event Mr. Newsom mentions began during the Biden administration. The date chosen is, appropriately, Flag Day. That the commander in chief’s birthday happens also to fall on that date doesn’t mean that its purpose was “to celebrate his birthday.”
Moreover, Mr. Newsom insulted our brave men and women in the army by calling their participation in the parade — dressed in military uniforms worn in all the major wars they fought in, beginning with the Revolutionary War, alongside their military equipment — a “vulgar display.”
What’s truly a vulgar display is the violence carried out by the rioters who have torched automobiles, thrown stones and chunks of concrete at police and looted nearby stores.
