Chicago Sky star Angel Reese is not happy with the state of WNBA officiating.
The Maryland native became the latest critic of the league’s referees on Sunday after an 80-75 loss to the Minnesota Lynx.
The Sky attempted just eight free throws on Sunday, while the Lynx took 17 shots from the charity stripe. Reese said her attempts to lobby the referees were unsuccessful.
“She tells me it’s not her job,” the league’s leading rebounder said of her conversation with an official. “So it’s frustrating because I know how hard we are battling inside, and I think that we came down and fought as hard as we could with what we had.”
The officiating has become a nagging issue for coaches and players, who are looking to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement before next season.
A game between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun last month devolved into a shoving match after superstar Caitlin Clark was fouled and poked in the eye.
Clark’s coaches and teammates on the Fever weren’t happy with how the referees handled the incident.
“You could tell this was going to happen,” Fever coach Stephanie White said in June. “So, they got to get control of it. They got to be better.”
Reese echoed those thoughts Sunday.
“It has to be fixed,” she said. “And I don’t give a damn if I get fined because that s— is cheap, and I’m tired of this s—. Because I’ve been nice, and I’ve been humble with it. But I’m tired of this s—.”
She capped the night with a call to action on social media.
“Do better. @WNBA,” Reese wrote on X in yelling all-capital letters.
