Losing is bad enough. Losing and almost injuring your team’s star player is even worse.
The New York Yankees’ Subway Series loss to the New York Mets on Saturday got more embarrassing when friendly fire broke the sunglasses of reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge and left him with a bloody gash near his eye.
While jogging off the field following the bottom of the fourth inning, shortstop Anthony Volpe tossed a ball toward right field. The pass clocked an unaware Judge in the face.
Judge’s eyewear shattered onto the field as a cut began bleeding near his right eye.
“I didn’t know what happened initially,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I just saw what felt like something happened. Of course I was concerned. [Judge] had a little cut. In the end, I don’t think it’s anything too serious. Initially, obviously very concerned.”
Judge didn’t miss any time, returning to the field with a small bandage after the mishap.
Volpe homered in his next at-bat, but the Mets defeated the Yankees 12-6, extending the Bronx Bombers’ losing streak to six games.
“It’s been a terrible week,” Boone said.
