Montgomery County police on Thursday said no charges are forthcoming after a man brought a plastic training rifle to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, prompting a brief lockdown over active-shooter fears.

Authorities said there was no malicious intent and cleared the man of any wrongdoing in the incident that happened just before 10:30 a.m. on the 8900 block of Rockville Pike in Bethesda, Maryland.

Police said earlier they took the man into custody for taking the phony gun onto the sprawling campus.

Naval Support Activity Bethesda officials said the seemingly armed person was near Building 10, causing the facility to lock down and close its gates to nonemergency traffic.

Montgomery County police said the scene was secure by 11 a.m.
