Washington Commanders offensive lineman Nate Herbig ended his time with them before it began. The 27-year-old announced his retirement on Tuesday, one week into his first training camp with the NFL team.

Coach Dan Quinn called the move a “personal decision” by the guard.

Herbig signed with Washington this offseason after spending last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran agreed to a one-year, $1.3 million deal and was expected to compete for a backup role with the Commanders.

“He was a great teammate here,” Quinn told reporters on Tuesday morning.

Herbig started 30 games in his career after signing as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019.

The Stanford product’s retirement opens a spot on the Commanders’ 90-man training camp squad.
