Last week the Times’ Commentary section contained a call for the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to step down (“Gabbard’s gotta go,” Web, July 18). Was that because Ms. Gabbard said she had evidence of President Barack Obama committing criminal acts while in office? In fact, she had a smoking gun (“A deep-state housecleaning,” Web, July 22). It seems Mr. Obama directed his intelligence people to put out a false story of Russian interference in the 2016 election, favoring then-candidate Donald Trump.

It’s no surprise that the deep state’s story was false. What’s astonishing is that anyone believed it.

The notion that Russia would help Mr. Trump win the election defies common sense. To attack Ukraine, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin needed a pushover in the White House.

Meantime, our subversive left knew that the public, on being told the fairy tale, would be too gullible to think of this obvious fact refuting it.

The good news is that we’re a little less gullible now, after four years of post-Obama pain.
