Washington Nationals prospect Alex Clemmey is headed to Atlanta for Major League Baseball’s All-Star festivities, the franchise announced Thursday. The 19-year-old, who pitches for High-A Wilmington, will play in the All-Star Futures Game alongside other top minor leaguers.
Clemmey is replacing Travis Sykora, Washington’s top prospect. Sykora, who is pitching for Double-A Harrisburg, was removed from the All-Star celebrations because of triceps soreness.
Washington acquired Clemmey through a trade that sent outfielder Lane Thomas to the Cleveland Guardians last July. The 6-foot-6 right-hander has quickly become one of the top pitchers in the Nationals’ farm system.
In 15 appearances this season, Clemmey has posted a 4-4 record with a 3.34 ERA, holding opposing batters to a .213 batting average. His 88 strikeouts are the most by any teenager in the minor leagues.
Clemmey will represent the Nationals alongside fellow pitcher Marquis Grissom Jr., who plays for Triple-A Rochester.
The All-Star Futures Game begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday. It will air live on MLB Network.
