President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to reflect its proximity to America.
Mr. Trump insisted the body of water’s name should be changed to “Gulf of America.”
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Mr. Trump said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. “That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
Mr. Trump’s name-change proposal is in line with the aggressive stance he has taken toward Mexico, including a threat to impose high tariffs and plans to reinforce the U.S. border.
