OPINION:
Think about the damage that was inflicted upon our nation over the past four years because many felt that Donald Trump was a flawed individual. In Everett Piper’s “Time for ‘Never Trumpers’ to admit they were wrong about Donald Trump” (Web, Feb. 16) Mr. Piper courageously admits that he was wrong about Trump. I have seen many Christians do the same; apparently feeling compelled to take on a holier-than-thou persona, they insist that President Trump isn’t Christian enough or conservative enough, or else they just want to dwell on his alleged transgressions and sins.
Ironically, it is Christians of all people who should know that we are all flawed, and that is why Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for our sins and salvation. It was reported that approximately 30 million evangelical Christians chose to sit out the 2016 elections and likely did the same in our most recent election because of Mr. Trump’s perceived flaws. Apparently, many failed to notice that in President Trump’s first term, he served more conservatively than any president since Ronald Reagan. He fought to protect religious freedom and capitalism and believes that we are an exceptional nation. President Trump was the antithesis of the radical Democrats that came to power and just about destroyed our country.
All Christians should read Mr. Piper’s recent commentary piece and pluck up the courage to rethink their positions, as he did. Also, don’t look for the perfect candidate; you’ll be disappointed, as there are none. Look instead at their ideology and the way they govern and the choice should be obvious.
If a large number come to the same conclusion that Mr. Piper did, we can win the 2026 midterm elections, retaining the House and Senate, and continue to restore prosperity and greatness to our nation. However, remember that sitting out again and not voting is in fact voting — and it’s a vote for evil and the destruction of our nation and way of life.
