The Department of Government Efficiency should take a very close look at the staff organization of the Defense Department.

The secretariat staff and the service staff are essentially duplicative. While the service staff are useful, the advisement role they provide to the civilian and subordinate secretaries can be rolled into the duties of the secretariat staff, eliminating quite a bit of redundancy.

Many of the operational actions undertaken by the service staff could be sent to the combatant commanders and force provider commands.

Finally, the budget process used to be a two-year program — and it should revert to that. A return would save hours and hours of budget programming.
