Bill Gertz is right to note the dangers that China and Iran pose to the U.S. and our allies —  but he omits crucial details about one of the individuals President Trump has nominated to confront these threats (“Senior Trump officials rally as pick for Pentagon policy post faces flak,” Web, Feb. 17).

President Trump’s nominee for undersecretary of defense for policy, Elbridge Colby, has been warning of the dangers posed by China for years. As for his stance on Iran, both the Republican Jewish Coalition and the Zionist Organization of America, among others, have endorsed Colby.

In a Feb. 13 letter to Sen. Roger Wicker of the Armed Services Committee, ZOA noted that it spoke with Mr. Colby about the “grave threat” posed by a “nuclear Iran” and said Mr. Colby had “expressed his view that the United States should continue to provide Israel with U.S. financial aid and everything, any military equipment and ammunition and armamentarium that Israel needs to deal with the Iranian threat or any threat.”

Colby has called Israel a “model ally” and expressed his belief that the U.S. should “stand behind and support” the Jewish state in its ongoing war against Iranian proxies.

Both China and Iran are threats. And we must be clear-eyed about our enemies and our allies.
