A famous name is joining the Washington Commanders’ coaching staff. Jesse Madden, grandson of Hall of Fame coach John Madden, will join the franchise as an offensive quality control coach, the team announced Tuesday.
Washington’s new assistant coach recently graduated from Michigan, where he was a quarterback before switching to defensive back. Madden appeared in just one game with the Wolverines, though he was part of the 2024 national championship team.
Madden has said he was largely inspired by his famous grandfather, who won a Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders before cementing his legacy as a broadcaster and lending his name to the long-running EA Sports video game franchise.
“Being with him on game days was something I’ll never forget,” Madden said in a 2023 video on the Wolverines’ team website. “When he was broadcasting games, you hear the enthusiasm in his voice, how much he loved the game.”
The Commanders also hired Brian Schneider to replace the outgoing John Glenn as assistant special teams coordinator. Schneider was most recently the San Francisco 49ers special teams coordinator in 2022 and 2023.
He worked with current Washington coach Dan Quinn on the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff during three seasons between 2010 and 2014.
