The Washington Capitals are honoring another slice of history in their 50th anniversary celebrations.

On Friday, the franchise will unveil a plaque next to the Washington Harbour fountain in Georgetown where Alex Ovechkin famously ditched his shirt and swam with the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Stanley Cup champions T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom are expected to attend the celebration.

Ovechkin’s celebration, where he and his teammates frolicked and splashed just days after securing the first championship in team history, went viral in 2016. Washington’s captain later said the idea came from Oshie and long-time teammate Tom Wilson.

“We had a couple beers. Osh and Tom came to me like, ’Hey let’s go swim in the fountains.’ I’m like, What?’ …” Ovechkin later told the team’s website. “There were policemen and we said, ’Hey, is it OK we’re going to do it?’ And they were like, ’You can do whatever you want, guys.’”

The alcohol-influenced celebration will now be permanently recognized. As part of Friday’s celebration, the Capitals will host a DJ, giveaways, prizes and other activities. Fans donning Capitals gear can also receive a discount on skate rentals at the nearby Washington Harbor Ice Rink.
