Why did the suspected shooter of two National Guard members, one of whom subsequently died from her injuries, receive asylum this year after waiting more than three years to apply for it after entering the United States in 2021 (“Afghan national pleads not guilty to murder in National Guard shootings,” Web, Dec. 2)?

Under 8 U.S.C. § 1158(b), asylum applications must be filed within one year of entry. “Maryland man” Kilmar Abrego Garcia was denied asylum because his application was submitted more than a year after he entered the U.S.

The attorney general should immediately revoke the asylum of accused shooter and Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal as the law provides. She should also release the complete record of Mr. Lakanwal’s case, including the recording and transcript of his asylum interview.

This is especially important because we now know his case worker reported as early as January 2024 that he had regular “manic attacks” and isolated himself from his family.
