With Washington mired in a lost season due to numerous injuries, it’s time to think outside the proverbial box (“Feisty Commanders mourn lost season as Eagles clinch NFC East: ‘That could be us,’” Web, Dec. 21).

In light of 44-year-old grandfather Philip Rivers’ successful return from retirement with the Colts, Washington should consider its own senior reunion.

At quarterback, with Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota hurt, they should sign Joe Theismann (76), Billy Kilmer (86, but his spirals probably wobble no more today than they dud 50 years ago) or even 91-year-old great-grandfather Sonny Jurgensen.

On offense, they should add John Riggins (76), plus either Clarence Harmon (70), Nick Giaquinto (70), Joe Washington (72) or Larry Brown (78) to replace injured running back Austin Ekeler; Clint Didier (66), Don Warren (69) or Rick “Doc” Walker (70) for tight end Zach Ertz; Russ Grimm (66) for offensive guard Sam Cosmi and Charlie Brown (67), Virgil Seay (67), Art Monk (68), Alvin Garrett (69), Ricky Thompson (71) or Roy Jefferson (82) for receivers Luke McCaffrey and Terry McLaurin.

On defense, they need Dexter Manley (66), Diron Talbert (81) or Ron McDole (86) to replace defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. and Darrell Green (65), Mark Murphy (70), Joe Lavender (76), Mike Bass (80) or Ken Houston (81) for defensive backs Will Harris and Marshon Lattimore.

Finally, on special teams, they should bring back kicker Mark Moseley (77), kick returner Mike Nelms (70) and punter Mike Bragg (79).

This would bring new meaning to the team’s classic “Over the Hill Gang” nickname!
