Nice piece by Sean Salai on the surge of artificial intelligence-generated scams (“AI fuels surge in digital holiday scams,” Web, Dec. 10). No one else is reporting on this it and I think most people are not even aware it is happening.

With the mad dash into AI, however, this was easily foreseeable — and warnings should have been sent out to the general public. The internet was not built by normal commerce, but by the pornography industry bypassing the obstacles put in place by local governments and society in general.

When that industry exploded in scale, others suddenly saw potential, but we must remember that it was the “dark commerce” that made it possible. Anyone who thought AI was some squishy, lovable new tech is in for a surprise. And I know the computer security industry is terrified of what real AI means.
