Miami — 9-2 and No. 12 in the College Football Playoff rankings — could be left out of the title tournament despite beating likely playoff-bound Notre Dame (9-2, No. 9 CFP).
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis isn’t thrilled about that possibility, he wrote Tuesday on social media.
“How to explain the discrepancy?” the Republican executive wrote on X.
The playoff committee’s stated selection criteria list head-to-head competition, strength of schedule and “comparative outcomes of common opponents.”
“It doesn’t get applied with consistency and predictability,” Mr. DeSantis wrote. “It’s situational logic that is not applied to Miami vs. ND.”
The current selection process, he reckoned, will eventually disincentivize teams from scheduling tougher opponents in the regular season. It can punish some teams, like BYU (11-1, No. 11 CFP), for participating in their conference championship games.
If BYU wins the Big 12 title, it will be a virtual lock for the CFP. But a loss to Texas Tech (11-1, No. 5 CFP) could squash the Cougars’ national championship dreams.
“It’s part of the bizarre system we have. You are better off not making the conference championship in some instances,” Florida’s governor wrote. “Needs an overhaul.”
The selection committee will announce the 12 playoff teams — the five top-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked squads — on Sunday.
