President Trump said military service members are receiving a patriotic chunk of change this holiday season thanks to revenue from his tariffs.

Mr. Trump said that over 1.4 million service members will be receiving a check for $1,776 — an amount set to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The money is already on the way, he said, dubbing the payments a “warrior dividend.”

“A warrior dividend in honor of our nation’s founding,” he said, announcing it in a prime-time speech Wednesday delivered from the Diplomatic Room at the White House.

The president said, “We made a lot more money than anybody thought because of tariffs.”

“Nobody deserves it more than our military, and I say congratulations to everybody,” he said.

The president has said his favorite word is “tariffs” and has consistently said they’re necessary because the U.S. has been taken advantage of for years.

“My favorite word — tariffs, which for many decades have been used successfully by other countries against us, but not anymore,” he said.

Mr. Trump has previously floated the idea of giving $2,000 checks to all American citizens except the wealthy because of how successful he claims the tariffs are.
