OPINION:
Enough with Democrats complaining about affordability (“Trump hitting the road to gain upper hand on the affordability debate,” Web, Dec. 8)! A wise man once said, “Your actions are so loud, I cannot hear what you are saying.” He must have been commenting on Democrats.
This November and in the two preceding Virginia legislative elections, Democratic voters in Fairfax County voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates, significantly contributing to the Democratic majorities in both the House of Delegates and the Senate.
Last year, that legislature voted to give local jurisdictions the right to decide for themselves, without putting the question to voters, issues such as a meal tax. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, all but one a Democrat, then moved rapidly to approve the meal tax, which will become effective Jan. 1. The board was aware that not just once, but twice, the voters in Fairfax County had rejected the tax by significant margins. Apparently, what the people want is of zero importance to Democratic members of the board.
This week, the Democrats in the Braddock District of Fairfax County voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate, who easily won the election with nearly 70% of the vote.
So please, Democrats, stop with your insistent commentary blaming Republicans in general and President Trump in particular for the “affordability problem.” What you are saying — as you simultaneously vote for Democratic candidates whose only objective seems to be to raise the cost of everything for you and all other consumers — is at great odds with your actions.
Republicans aren’t the problem; neither is Mr. Trump. It is you, Mr. and Mrs. Democrat. You are the problem. At least have the character to own that and stop falsely blaming your political opponents for a lack of affordability.
