Quarterback Jayden Daniels won’t start for the Washington Commanders in Sunday’s road game against the New York Giants, coach Dan Quinn announced Wednesday.
The right-handed signal-caller reaggravated his left elbow during Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Quinn noted that Daniels did not suffer any “structural damage” in the joint.
The quarterback missed a month of action after dislocating the elbow in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year has already missed six of the Commanders’ 13 games this season.
His mounting injuries — including a knee sprain in Week 2 and a hamstring injury in Week 7 — have led many fans to call for Daniels to be shut down for the remainder of the season to avoid further issues.
The LSU product has struggled after leading Washington to the NFC title game last season. His passer rating, completion percentage and yards per attempt have all dipped toward league average.
Washington is 3-10, already eliminated from playoff contention amid an eight-game losing streak.
Quinn said his staff isn’t ready to end Daniels’ disappointing second season, though.
“We’ll see where we are next week,” the coach told reporters on Wednesday.
Daniels is expected to practice in a limited capacity while backup quarterback Marcus Mariota prepares for his seventh start of the season.
