OPINION:
Reading “Smart Trump trade deal could move India closer to the West and away from Russia” (Web, Aug. 6), I was struck by the line “We don’t have the ability to fulfill India’s oil needs.”
If Russian leader Vladimir Putin won’t get serious about peace in Ukraine, President Trump’s attempt to get India to cease buying oil from Russia would be hamstrung. We don’t want to punish India, as it has the world’s largest population and almost unlimited trade potential.
India needs oil and will turn to any country to get it. We can’t blame it for that.
How about this idea? Get OPEC to chip in some of its massive oil supply to make up the deficit.
