The Capitals’ “Great Eight” will be carved into a six-acre corn maze at a Maryland farm this fall, the team announced Wednesday. Alex Ovechkin will be prominently featured in the display at Summers Farm in Middletown to honor his record-breaking 895 career goals.

The maze will open on Saturday and run through Halloween.

“We wanted to honor one of the greatest athletes of our generation in a way that’s unforgettable and full of energy — just like Ovi,” Teresa Summers, the owner of the Frederick County farm, said in a news release. “His record-breaking moment is historic, and we’re thrilled to carve that legacy into our fields this fall. Ovi’s milestone is one for the history books—and now, one for the cornfields!”

Some of the proceeds from the maze will support Ovechkin’s charity of choice: “The Gr8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer.” The 39-year-old started the initiative last year as he approached Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record.

For each goal scored, the Russian agreed to donate a corresponding amount to charity for the rest of his career. His record-breaking 895th goal came with an $895 donation, with funds matched by Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Capitals.

“We love that this year’s design celebrates more than just sports,” Ms. Summers said. “It celebrates heart, determination, and the power of giving back.”

Ovechkin and the Capitals open the regular season at home against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8.
