The Washington Commanders activated wide receiver Terry McLaurin from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday, though the 29-year-old has still not appeared on the practice field.
McLaurin has missed all of training camp and the spring’s mandatory minicamps as he negotiates a contract extension. Saturday’s move was not an indicator of progress on negotiations, according to multiple reports.
The receiver will still miss Monday’s home preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals as he recovers from an ankle injury. Veterans like linebacker Bobby Wagner, tight end Zach Ertz, lineman Laremy Tunsil, edge rusher Von Miller, guard Sam Cosmi and backup quarterback Marcus Mariota will also miss the exhibition.
Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels will make his first start of the season after sitting out last week’s preseason opener. The second-year star will play “a few series” with the other starters, said coach Dan Quinn.
Quinn also noted that McLaurin will probably also miss the preseason finale at home against the Baltimore Ravens a week from Saturday.
“We’ve got a real process in our return-to-play that we believe in,” Quinn said. “We know it works, so we’ll hit all those steps.”
The Commanders open the regular season by hosting the New York Giants on Sept. 7.
