President Trump’s taking control of Washington’s policing is the first step in returning oversight and governance of the district to Congress (“National Guard hits D.C.; federal takeover already nets dozens of arrests, encampment clearings,” Web, Aug. 12).

Washington is a federal district. Its control and management is Congress’ responsibility, but more than 50 years ago Congress shirked its responsibility and turned its governance over to local politicians. Ever since, it has become a textbook example of how not to govern.

The current mayor, Muriel Bowser, and the entire 13-member D.C. Council are 100% incompetent. They and their ilk should be run out of this region. Like-minded idiots should never be permitted to rule the federal district again.

It’s laughable but predictable that protesters taking to the streets howling against President Trump and his much-needed takeover are ignorant woke-ists. One female protester was shown on TV loudly mouthing, “We have rights!” Well, for sure, she does have rights; but in this matter, she has no idea of what she’s talking about, or that Mr. Trump is protecting her. She and most of the protesters weren’t even born when Washington was surrendered to Democratic President Lyndon Johnson’s plan for home rule.

Since then, the city has descended into mayhem born of incompetence. It’s unsafe to venture into this jungle.

Some ignoramuses in the news media are calling Mr. Trump’s takeover “unprecedented.” That’s nonsense. What was unprecedented was the acceptance of Johnson’s plan and Congress’ handing off of its own responsibilities to govern the district.
