President Trump is finding out what many American negotiators have faced when dealing with the Russians and other communists like Vladimir Putin: They don’t negotiate in good faith and they cannot be trusted. Two prime examples are the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Putin has stated that he has no intention of leaving the areas of Ukraine the Russian army has seized by the force. He is unlikely to change his position absent an overwhelming NATO military force at the gates of the Kremlin.

Mr. Trump may want peace but soon may find himself stumbling into a situation that either betrays Ukraine or sees us going to war with Russia.
